The Sainsbury Centre commissioned Ark to develop the visual identity for Why Do We Take Drugs? – an ambitious exhibition programme exploring humanity’s relationship with mind-altering substances across cultures, history and contemporary society. From the ceremonial use of ayahuasca in Indigenous Amazonian communities to modern conversations around addiction, medicine and recreation, the exhibition invited visitors to question assumptions and explore the many roles drugs have played throughout human civilisation.
Our creative response was inspired by the visual language of the Amazon. Drawing influence from Indigenous symbolism, pattern and mark-making, we designed a bespoke typographic system that reinterprets traditional Amazonian motifs through a contemporary lens. The custom letterforms became the foundation of a flexible identity system, creating a distinctive visual language that felt culturally rooted while remaining bold, modern and highly recognisable.
At the centre of the identity sits a dynamic portal device that symbolises the act of looking beyond preconceptions. Across digital, motion and environmental applications, the portal animates to reveal changing imagery and messages, drawing audiences deeper into the exhibition and reflecting the different perspectives, cultures and altered states explored within it. The device became a unifying graphic language across the entire campaign, giving the exhibition a strong, memorable presence across every touchpoint.
The identity was rolled out across exhibition graphics, promotional campaigns, digital communications and a beautifully crafted companion publication, creating a cohesive visitor experience that extended beyond the gallery walls and reflected the Sainsbury Centre’s reputation for challenging audiences through art and design.
